Tension prevailed along the India-Bangladesh border in Assam's Sribhumi district after an alleged pushback attempt triggered a face-off between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The incident occurred in the Bilbari border area, where the situation remained tense throughout the day. Reports claimed that the confrontation began when an attempt was made to push a group of Bangladeshi nationals towards the New Pallathal area on the Bangladesh side of the border.
The BGB allegedly objected to the move and prevented the group from entering Bangladeshi territory.
As news of the incident spread, residents of nearby border villages reportedly gathered near the border carrying knives, sticks and bamboo poles in support of the BGB.
According to the reports, personnel from the BGB's Pallathal border outpost repeatedly issued warnings to the BSF through loudspeakers, urging it not to undertake any alleged "illegal pushback" and to move away from the border. The BGB also reportedly warned that it would be forced to open fire if the situation escalated and if the people were not withdrawn.
The incident heightened tensions along the international border in Sribhumi district.
