Tensions have reportedly risen along the India-Bangladesh international border in Meghalaya's South West Garo Hills district following an alleged dispute over the acceptance of a man who was reportedly pushed back across the border after being detained by the Border Security Force (BSF).
According to sources, the incident occurred in the Nandir Char sector near Mahendraganj, where a man alleged to be a Bangladeshi national was detained by the BSF after reportedly entering Indian territory illegally through the Meghalaya border.
Following his detention, the BSF is reported to have carried out a pushback operation in accordance with established procedures and sent the individual back towards Bangladesh. However, allegations have emerged that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), along with local residents on the Bangladeshi side, refused to accept the individual after he crossed the border.
As a result, the man is reportedly stranded in the area beyond the border fencing, leading to a tense situation along the international frontier.
Sources familiar with the matter said the individual had allegedly admitted to being a Bangladeshi citizen. Despite this, authorities and residents on the Bangladesh side are reported to have declined to take custody of him, creating uncertainty over his status and contributing to tensions in the border region.
Meanwhile, several videos purportedly linked to the incident have surfaced on social media. The footage allegedly shows heightened activity and a tense atmosphere in the border area, although the authenticity of the videos and the claims surrounding them could not be independently verified.
Security agencies are understood to be closely monitoring the situation. No official statement had been issued by either the BSF or the BGB at the time of reporting.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts by border authorities of both countries to address issues relating to illegal cross-border movement and repatriation procedures along the India-Bangladesh frontier.
