Three arrested in Assam’s Cachar for alleged molestation, sexual assault attempt on woman

Three youths have been arrested in Assam’s Cachar district for allegedly molesting a woman and attempting to sexually assault her in an area adjoining the Hathichara Tea Estate under Udarbond police station.

The arrested accused have been identified as Hasim Uddin Khan (27), Mannan Laskar (35) and Rezaul Hussain Laskar (25). Another accused, identified as Manzur Hussain Laskar, is reportedly absconding.

According to the FIR, the incident took place on the night of October 3 when the woman was returning home with her nine-month-old baby in her arms.

The accused allegedly intercepted her on NH-27 near the Hathichara Tea Estate and subjected her to obscene behaviour and attempted molestation, the complaint alleged.

Hearing the woman’s cries, local residents rushed to the spot, following which the accused allegedly tried to flee. Hasim Uddin Khan was reportedly caught by local residents at the spot.

Police subsequently arrested the other two accused after registering a case and launching an investigation based on the complaint.

The three accused were produced before a court in Silchar on Monday.
