A 35-year-old tipper driver died after allegedly suffering an electric shock at a petrol pump in the Saidband area near Hailakandi town.
The deceased has been identified as Didar Hussain Sheikh. According to reports, Didar had taken his tipper to the petrol pump for refuelling. After filling the vehicle, he reportedly raised the truck’s hydraulic trailer, which came into contact with an overhead electricity wire.
While attempting to get down from the vehicle, Didar allegedly came in contact with the live electrical line and sustained critical injuries.
He was initially rushed to Algapur Hospital and was later shifted to SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi, where doctors declared him dead.
Algapur-Kanchanpur Zila Parishad member Aftab Uddin alleged negligence on the part of the petrol pump authorities and the electricity department. He claimed that exposed electrical wiring instead of properly insulated cables may have contributed to the accident.
Police have sent the deceased’s body for post-mortem examination and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Didar Hussain Sheikh is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. The incident has cast a pall of grief over the area.
