The Central GST office in Bongaigaon district has been questioning Mangaldoi Transport Officer Deepak Patowary in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged vehicle trade fraud.
Patowary, who is currently serving as the in-charge transport officer, has been under interrogation since February 27.
Sources said the questioning is being jointly conducted by officials of the Customs Department and the Central GST.
A multi-member team from Kerala and Meghalaya has been continuing the interrogation at the Bongaigaon office.
According to officials, there is a strong possibility that Deepak Patowary may be produced before a court later in the day. However, the Central GST department has not yet disclosed the specific grounds on which he has been detained or questioned.
It has been learnt that the interrogation is being led by the Customs Department from Kochi, and is linked to an investigation into alleged irregularities and fraud in the purchase and sale of vehicles.
Sources further revealed that this is not the first time Patowary has faced legal trouble. He had earlier been arrested in a separate case related to vehicle registration fraud, adding to the seriousness of the current probe.
Officials said the investigation is ongoing and further details are expected to emerge once the questioning is completed and formal proceedings, if any, are initiated.
