Police arrested two cattle thieves and recovered five stolen cattle after a chase in Kaliabor, officials said.
According to police, a pickup van carrying the stolen cattle was intercepted at Bagori while it was travelling from the Kaziranga side towards Nagaon. When police signalled the vehicle to stop, the accused attempted to flee.
Police teams from Khatowal and Jakhalabandha gave chase to the vehicle. During the pursuit, the cattle-laden van entered a village road at Barbhagiya, where the driver lost control and crashed into a bamboo grove.
Police seized the vehicle along with the five cattle, though three accused initially managed to escape. With the assistance of local residents, one accused was apprehended at Barbhagiya, while another fleeing suspect was caught by villagers in the Hatigaon area and later handed over to the police.
The arrested accused have been identified as Abdul Jalil, a resident of Misa Garhbasti, and Saddam Hussain of Rupahi Kawaimari.
Police said the cattle had been stolen earlier in the night from the Purani Gudam area.
