Sensation prevailed in the Dumdumia area of Dhing in Assam's Nagaon district after two alleged cattle thieves were caught by local residents while attempting to sell a stolen cow in a local market.
The accused have been identified as Hamid Ali of Moirabari and Saddam Hussain of Segunbari. Following their detention by villagers, the duo was handed over to the Dumdumia Police Outpost.
According to reports, Mahibul Islam, a resident of Shagunbari village under Moirabari, had purchased a cow from Moirabari market ahead of the sacred Eid-ul-Adha celebrations. However, the animal was allegedly stolen during the night.
Although the victim informed the police about the theft, no breakthrough had been made initially. The situation took a dramatic turn when the stolen cow was allegedly brought to Dumdumia market for sale. Alert locals identified the animal and immediately detained the two suspects.
The villagers subsequently handed over the accused to the police and successfully recovered the stolen cow.
Police suspect that a larger cattle theft network may be operating in the region and are investigating possible links to an organised gang involved in such crimes.
The two accused are currently in the custody of Moirabari Police, who have launched further interrogation to uncover the extent of the alleged racket.
The incident has triggered widespread concern across the area, with residents demanding stricter action against cattle theft and enhanced policing in rural markets.
