Tyre-burning protest over proposed transfer of revenue villages blocks Nagaon–Morigaon highway in Assam

Tension gripped Dandua in Assam's Morigaon district on Wednesday, July 29, after hundreds of residents staged a protest against the proposed transfer of several revenue villages from the Morigaon Revenue Circle to the Mikirbheta Revenue Circle.
 

The protesters, including men, women, and youths, blocked the Nagaon–Morigaon State Highway by burning tyres, bringing traffic to a complete standstill. The road blockade led to long queues of stranded vehicles on both sides of the highway, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.
 

According to the protesters, the proposed administrative reorganisation would shift villages such as Nij Dandua, Bonpara, Sapkati, and several other adjoining areas from the Morigaon Revenue Circle to the Mikirbheta Revenue Circle. Residents alleged that they were neither consulted nor informed adequately before the proposal was initiated.
 

Raising slogans against the move, the demonstrators also expressed anger against local MLA Ramakanta Deuri, holding him responsible for failing to address their concerns. Protesters demanded that the government immediately withdraw the proposal and retain the villages under the Morigaon Revenue Circle.
 

A large contingent of police, led by the Morigaon Superintendent of Police, reached the protest site to prevent any escalation. Senior police officials held discussions with the demonstrators in an effort to restore normalcy and reopen the highway.
 

The protesters maintained that they would continue their agitation if the proposed transfer was not revoked. They asserted that they would not allow their villages to be brought under the Mikirbheta Revenue Circle under any circumstances.
