Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday, July 1, visited flood-affected areas in Assam’s Dhemaji district to assess the extent of damage caused by recent floods. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju accompanied him during the visit.
Following an inspection of the affected areas, Chouhan said the scale of destruction was severe, noting that a river had altered its course, resulting in extensive damage to habitations and agricultural land.
“We witnessed the destruction here. A river changed its course and everything was destroyed. Several houses were washed away, crops suffered extensive damage and electric poles collapsed,” he said.
Describing the situation as a major crisis, the Union Minister assured affected residents that both the Central and State governments were committed to supporting relief, restoration and rehabilitation efforts.
He stated that the administration was already engaged in restoring normalcy and ensuring the gradual resumption of daily life in the affected areas.
Highlighting the challenges ahead, Chouhan said accumulated debris and silt deposited across agricultural land would need to be cleared to enable cultivation to resume. He added that the government would work towards facilitating such restoration measures.
The Union Minister further stated that damaged houses would be reconstructed and compensation for losses would be provided after completion of the official assessment process.
Reaffirming the Centre’s commitment, Chouhan said all possible assistance would be extended to Assam to support recovery and rehabilitation efforts in the flood-affected region.
