The Bijni district unit of the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) on February 13, organised a ‘Shanti Samannay Pad Yatra’ (Peace Coordination March) in Bijni.
The march commenced from the UPPL district office in Bijni and concluded at the Bijni District Sports Association playground, with party leaders and supporters participating in large numbers.
Addressing the gathering, former Chief of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and UPPL president Pramod Boro expressed confidence that the Bijni constituency would come under UPPL’s fold. He stated that the party is well-prepared in 15 BTC constituencies and is currently reviewing the ground situation. A final decision on the strongest constituencies would be taken after a week, he added.
Boro claimed that the UPPL is now stronger than before and said that the people of Bodoland have realised that the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) cannot ensure a healthy governance environment. He alleged that BPF leaders and workers are currently engaged in activities such as liquor, drugs, gambling and syndicate operations.
He further asserted that UPPL stands for principles, ideals and peace, and therefore people are increasingly discussing and supporting the party.
The peace march was attended by several senior leaders, including former BTC Executive Member and current councilor Dhananjay Basumatary, UPPL general secretary Raju Narzary, Madhav Kumar Chetri, party vice president Kamal Singh Narzary, former EM Ranjit Basumatary and other party leaders and workers.
The event concluded peacefully at the sports ground amid party slogans and public participation.
