All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) president Utpal Sarma on Sunday, September 20 criticised BJP MLA Vijay Gupta over his reported remarks on late Assamese singer and musician Zubeen Garg, saying Gupta could not be compared even to a “fallen leaf”.
The remarks came as Assam observed the first death anniversary of Zubeen Garg, with tributes and memorial programmes being held across the state.
Speaking to the media in Morigaon, Sarma strongly reacted to Gupta’s reported comments on the late music icon. He said Gupta did not merit comparison with Zubeen Garg and used the phrase “fallen leaf” while describing the BJP MLA.
Sarma’s comments come amid widespread public tributes to Zubeen Garg on the first anniversary of his death. The singer, musician and filmmaker died in Singapore in September 2025.
The controversy follows reported remarks by Gupta concerning Zubeen Garg, which drew criticism from sections of the public and organisations in Assam.
The AASU president's statement adds to the reactions surrounding the late artiste’s first death anniversary, as memorial events and programmes continue across the state.
