Residents of Madhatari village in Kaliabor apprehended a suspected goat thief who had been on the run for several days. The incident unfolded on Monday, October 6 when the accused attempted to flee by jumping into the Kolong River to escape public ire, but was eventually caught by locals.
According to reports, the man had allegedly stolen a goat from the village a few days earlier. The owner of the stolen livestock later identified the accused and alerted the Kaliabor Police. Following the complaint, the suspect had gone into hiding in Tezpur to evade arrest.
However, his return to the village today did not go unnoticed. Alert residents quickly surrounded and captured him, ending the brief manhunt. Before being handed over to the police, the crowd reportedly subjected him to a beating in anger over repeated livestock thefts in the area.
Police have taken the suspect into custody and are investigating the incident. Locals have urged for stricter vigilance to curb petty thefts that have become increasingly frequent in rural areas of the region.
