Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia on February 18, made it clear that he has no intention of joining the Bharatiya Janata Part (BJP), asserting that politics should be driven by public service, policy and ideals.
Speaking to media, the senior Indian National Congress leader said that anyone who truly believes in public service would pursue politics with a commitment to principles rather than personal gain.
“Anyone who has public service at heart and wants to work as a public servant will do so for policy and ideals,” Saikia said. He added that he does not share “good feelings” for the BJP, alleging that the party divides Assamese society in the name of ideology. “So I will not join the BJP,” he stated.
Saikia also reacted to the resignation of former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Kumar Borah from the Congress.
Saikia said, “Let him go. I will give him my blessings.” He recalled working closely with Borah in the past and acknowledged the guidance he received from him during his early days as a legislator.
“When I first became a new MLA in 2001, he advised me on how to present my views in the Assembly. He gave me good advice,” Saikia said. “He was my president, and we worked together.”
Saikia added that he was unaware of what led to Borah’s decision to resign but expressed respect for the support and mentorship he had received from him as a first-time member of the Assembly.
