Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, questioning his stance on Assamese identity and patriotism in light of the citizenship status of his children.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, October 7 Sarma questioned Gogoi’s credibility in commenting on matters concerning Assamese sentiment and national identity. “What justice will Gaurav Gogoi give to Zubeen? Zubeen is an Assamese and an Indian,” the Chief Minister said, referring to the ongoing public discourse surrounding late singer-actor Zubeen Garg’s case.
Sarma went on to allege that Gogoi had made both his children foreign nationals, suggesting that this raised questions about his commitment to the cause of Assamese people. “He has made his son a foreigner and now he’s waving the Indian flag. Then, change your citizenship,” Sarma remarked sharply.
The Chief Minister further stated that even if Gogoi’s children had “mistakenly” obtained British citizenship, the Congress leader should now take steps to make them Indian citizens—especially as he aspires to become the Chief Minister of Assam.
“Agreed that mistakes can happen in life, but in the current context, he should have applied for his children’s Indian citizenship. It’s been four months since this controversy began—shouldn’t he have acted by now?” Sarma questioned.
Highlighting what he called a matter of political and ethical inconsistency, Sarma added, “Imagine a situation where there are four people living in the Assam Chief Minister’s residence—Gaurav Gogoi is Indian, and the other three are foreigners. Which officer will go to him then?”
Concluding his remarks, Sarma asserted that a person who has “made his own children foreigners” has no moral right to criticize him or anyone else.
