A video purportedly showing a woman advocate being assaulted at the Azara Revenue Circle Office went viral on October 10, prompting Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi to demand action against the officials and individuals named in his allegations.
Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has demanded strict action over the alleged assault of a woman advocate inside the Azara Revenue Circle Office in Guwahati, questioning the safety of women in government establishments and calling for accountability in the case.
Gogoi raised the issue after sharing a video of the alleged incident on social media on October 10. He called on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take action against Azara Revenue Circle Officer Biplab Sharma Bordoloi, ALRS Bipul Deka and advocate Bastab Barman, whom he named in his statement.
According to the account shared by Gogoi, the female advocate had visited the revenue office for a hearing in connection with a case. She was allegedly subjected to verbal abuse by an ALRS official, who reportedly used obscene language and asked her to leave his room.
The incident allegedly escalated when the female advocate approached the Revenue Circle Officer to complain about the misconduct. According to the allegations, when she began recording the proceedings on her mobile phone, an official present at the spot grabbed her hand and attempted to take away the device.
The video, which circulated widely on October 10, has brought attention to the allegations of misconduct at the government office. However, the circumstances surrounding the incident and the allegations against the individuals named by Gogoi require independent verification.
In his statement, Gogoi criticised the alleged conduct and said women were not safe even in Jalukbari, the Chief Minister's constituency. He also questioned whether action would be taken against those accused of assaulting the advocate inside the office.
The Raijor Dal chief further urged Assam Police, the Director General of Police and the Guwahati Police Commissionerate to intervene and take action. He alleged that the incident had occurred after the office doors were closed.
