A construction worker was critically injured after falling through a lift shaft from the sixth floor of an under-construction apartment at Choukindighi in Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Friday, August 21.
The incident took place at Pushpadhar Apartment while the worker was reportedly carrying out repair work on the lift.
The worker, identified as Dweep Sonowal, allegedly fell through the lift shaft from the sixth floor while the repair work was underway.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued Sonowal from the site and rushed him to Shankardev Hospital in Dibrugarh. He is currently undergoing treatment in a critical condition.
According to allegations, Sonowal had been engaged for the work without adequate safety equipment. The contractor, identified as Munna Singh, has been accused of failing to provide necessary safety measures while assigning the worker to the job.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over compliance with workplace safety norms at construction sites in Dibrugarh, where apartment construction has expanded rapidly in recent years.
Residents have alleged that workers are often engaged in high-rise construction and repair work without adequate protective equipment, putting their lives at risk.
Similar incidents involving workers falling from higher floors of under-construction apartment buildings have reportedly occurred in the past.
The latest incident has renewed questions over the enforcement of safety regulations and the responsibility of contractors and authorities to ensure proper safety measures at construction sites.
