The construction of the world’s tallest statue of Bir Lachit Barphukan is gaining momentum. The first dispatch, from Ram Sutar’s Studio in Ghaziabad to Jorhat, has commenced, informed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 20.
To emphasise the bravery of the Ahoms against the Mughals, the BJP-led government in Assam has commissioned renowned sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar to create an 84-meter-long monument of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
The Ahoms ruled Assam for 600 years (1228-1826) before the British took control through the Treaty of Yandaboo in 1826.
While the story of Lachit Borphukan is popular in Assam, the BJP-led government in the state has taken up a slew of initiatives to promote it across the country.
