The recovery of a young man's body from the Rukni river near Kabuganj in Assam's Cachar district has sparked concern, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
The deceased was identified by his family as around 35-year-old Imam Hussain Barbhuiya.
According to preliminary information, two youths jumped into the Rukni river after allegedly being chased by a group of young men on Wednesday. While one of them managed to swim to safety, the other went missing after reportedly drowning.
A State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team later launched a search operation and recovered Barbhuiya's body from the river. His family subsequently identified the body.
Sonai Police sent the body to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The family has claimed that a young man known to Barbhuiya had called him out of his house on Wednesday morning. They have raised questions over how he subsequently reached the Rukni river area.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Police have launched an investigation and are examining various claims made by local residents.
There are also unverified claims about a possible connection between the incident and the drug trade or a previous dispute. Police are looking into these aspects as part of the investigation.
The exact sequence of events leading to Barbhuiya's death is expected to become clearer after the post-mortem examination and further investigation.
