In a heartfelt tribute to Assam’s most beloved musical icon, Zubeen Garg, a sprawling Zubeen Garg Memorial Botanical Garden has been inaugurated on the sandy banks of the Buroi River in Gohpur. Spread across nearly 10,000 bighas of land, the garden stands as a living monument to the singer’s deep-rooted love for nature and humanity.
The initiative was spearheaded by noted environmentalist and “Tree Man” Bakul Gogoi, in collaboration with the organization ‘Amar Bonani’ and the residents of Gamiri village. What was once a barren, silt-covered stretch of land has now been transformed into a flourishing green expanse dedicated to the memory of the legendary artist.
As part of the inauguration, 20 Nahor trees (Mesua ferrea) — symbolically referred to as “Zubeen Trees” — each standing 15 to 25 feet tall, were planted by fans and local volunteers. These trees now form the heart of the garden, symbolizing the enduring bond between Zubeen Garg and his admirers.
It was originally Zubeen Garg’s wish to inaugurate this garden himself, a dream left unfulfilled following his untimely demise. Since 2017, Bakul Gogoi has been nurturing these trees with immense care, ensuring that Zubeen’s love for nature continues to blossom through them.
The botanical garden today boasts nearly 300 species of plants, making it a sanctuary of biodiversity as well as emotion. Speaking on the occasion, Bakul Gogoi, the “Tree Man” of Assam invited fans from across the state and beyond to visit the garden and contribute by planting trees in honour of Zubeen Garg’s legacy.
