IMPHAL: Three cases of mucormycosis (black fungus) have been detected in Manipur so far with one individual succumbing to the infection earlier this month. According to sources, a team of ENT surgeons from the Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Imphal successfully performed surgery on a post-covid patient for mucormycosis on June 18.

According to the sources, a team of RIMS ENT surgeons led by Th Sudhiranjan, Dr. O Priyakumar, and Dr. N Jiten Singh successfully performed surgery for mucormycosis involving the nose and paranasal sinuses in a post-COVID patient. L Pradip Dr. Eshori Longjam led the anaesthetist team.

According to the sources, the patient was being treated at RIMS hospital by Ch Dhanaraj for a COVID-19 infection. All black fungus-affected areas have been cleansed and the patient is stable following surgery.

Black fungus was discovered in the right maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinuses, middle and inferior turbinates and the posterior part of the nasal septum during the surgery.
