Assam Minister and BJP leader Pijush Hazarika on April 4 claimed significant improvement in the flood situation in Guwahati, stating that the duration of waterlogging has reduced drastically due to ongoing government measures.
Addressing the issue of urban flooding, Hazarika said that while flash floods still occur, their impact and duration have come down compared to previous years.
Drawing from his personal experience of living in the city for three decades, he recalled that areas like Zoo Road used to remain inundated for up to three days, while Nabin Nagar would face waterlogging for nearly a week.
“I won’t say there are no floods in Guwahati now, but the situation has improved. Earlier, it would last for days; now it’s just for around three hours, if I am not wrong,” he said.
The minister attributed the improvement to flood mitigation and drainage measures undertaken by the current government, asserting that efforts are ongoing to further strengthen infrastructure and reduce the impact of heavy rainfall in the city.
His remarks come as Guwahati continues to grapple with seasonal flash floods, even as the government highlights progress in tackling one of the city’s most persistent urban challenges.
