Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma witnessed an overwhelming show of affection from women supporters during his campaign in Lakhimpur district, with visuals showing crowds mobbing him, hugging, and even kissing him as he moved through the area.
The scenes, shared on his official social media platforms, captured enthusiastic women gathering in large numbers in Bihpuria to greet the Chief Minister at close quarters, reflecting a strong emotional connection amid the election campaign.
Earlier, Sarma had described scratches on his hands—sustained during the crowded Jana Ashirwad Yatra—as “marks of love and affection” from supporters, embracing the physical signs of the intense public interaction in a positive light.
Notably, such public displays of affection, while not uncommon in Indian campaigns, signal a deep-rooted connection, particularly among women voters in Assam. This support is often linked to targeted welfare initiatives rolled out by the BJP-led state government.

Among these, the Orunodoi scheme has emerged as a flagship programme, providing direct financial assistance to women from economically weaker households, recognising them as primary caregivers. The government is also considering expanding the scheme further.
Another major initiative, the Lakhpati Baideo scheme, aims to empower nearly 40 lakh women by enabling them to become rural entrepreneurs, offering financial assistance of Rs 35,000 to start independent micro-businesses beyond self-help group structures.
Women-oriented schemes, combined with Sarma’s high-energy campaigning style, have helped build a strong support base among women, an increasingly influential voter segment in the state.
As Assam heads toward the 2026 Assembly elections, the visuals from Lakhimpur underline how personal connections and welfare politics are shaping the campaign narrative on the ground.
