Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday, April 6 said the National People's Party (NPP) remains committed to strengthening regional unity in the Northeast, as he campaigned in Assam’s Boko-Chaygaon constituency for the party candidate Ganseng G Sangma, ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Addressing the media during his visit, Sangma said the party was founded on a regional ideology envisioned by its late founder, P. A. Sangma, which emphasised unity among the diverse communities of the Northeast. He said the NPP continues to function on these guiding principles, aiming to build a cohesive platform for the region.
“The idea was to bring people of the Northeast together. If communities remain divided, the region’s collective strength weakens. But if we stand united, we can address many of the challenges facing the Northeast,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister noted that the NPP has been gradually expanding its presence across the region, with elected representatives in multiple northeastern states. He said the party’s broader objective is to provide a stronger and unified voice for the Northeast at various levels.
Highlighting the party’s electoral strategy, Sangma said the decision to field a candidate in the Boko-Chaygaon constituency was based on an assessment of the area’s demographic composition and political landscape. He pointed to the constituency’s mix of communities and claimed that certain political parties had not accommodated some candidates, creating an opportunity for the NPP to step in.
Sangma also said the party has fielded candidates in other elections across the region, including in Nagaland bypolls, as part of its effort to strengthen its organisational base and outreach.
Reiterating the party’s call for broader participation, he urged people across the Northeast to align with the NPP’s vision of regional unity and collective progress.
