The National People’s Party (NPP) on Saturday, April 4 held a public meeting at Santipur village in the Boko-Chaygaon Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) to campaign for its candidate, Ganseng B. Sangma, with senior party leaders highlighting the party’s regional expansion and outlining development priorities.
The meeting was attended by village headmen and members of the Garo community, alongside several party functionaries and star campaigners. Among those present were Bajengdoba MLA Pongseng R. Marak, Manipur MLA M. Rameshwar Singh, NPP National Vice-President I. Hemochandra Singh, National Secretary Saidul Khan, and Assam Garo National Council president Enindra Marak.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Marak recalled the founding of the NPP in 2012 by late P. A. Sangma, stating that the party was established with the vision of “One Voice, One Northeast.” He outlined the party’s expansion across Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, and said that Assam represents the next phase of its growth. He urged voters to support Mr. Sangma, describing him as a capable representative for the constituency.
Mr. Hemochandra Singh said the candidature of Ganseng B. Sangma marks the party’s initial step towards building its presence in Assam. He emphasised the need for broader political representation among the state’s diverse communities and called for electoral support to strengthen the party’s base.
Mr. Rameshwar Singh, speaking at the event, said that despite the introduction of multiple central government schemes, their benefits have not adequately reached the grassroots level in Boko-Chaygaon. He said the NPP would focus on ensuring effective implementation of such schemes if elected.
He also referred to the party’s alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in other states, stating that such partnerships have facilitated access to government benefits. He said similar outcomes could be expected in the constituency if the party gains representation. Mr. Singh further highlighted concerns over unemployment, noting that lack of opportunities could lead to social instability, and stressed the need for focused youth empowerment initiatives.
The meeting forms part of the NPP’s ongoing campaign efforts to expand its footprint in Assam ahead of the elections.
