A packed release calendar, headline stars and a mix of mythological epics, war dramas and franchise sequels have positioned 2026 as one of the most competitive years for Hindi cinema in recent times. Trade analysts point to a strong theatrical push, with studios betting on scale, familiar brands and pan-India appeal to pull audiences back to cinemas.

Among the titles already driving industry chatter are King, Ramayana and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War, alongside a slate of action-heavy and franchise-led projects spread across the year.

‘King’: Shah Rukh Khan returns with a new pairing

Directed by Siddharth Anand, King brings Shah Rukh Khan back to the action genre and marks the big-screen debut of his daughter Suhana Khan. Produced by Red Chillies Entertainment with Marflix Pictures, the film reunites Khan and Anand after Pathaan and is expected to combine “high-octane action with emotional depth”.

‘Ramayana’: Scale, stars and a two-part release

Touted as one of Indian cinema’s largest productions, Ramayana features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. Backed by Prime Focus Studios, DNEG and Monster Mind Creations, the film will release in two parts, with Part 1 scheduled for Diwali 2026 and Part 2 for Diwali 2027. Music is composed by Hans Zimmer and A R Rahman.

Sequels and franchises drive momentum

After a strong 2025 run, Dhurandhar 2 is locked for an Eid release on March 19, 2026, with a five-language pan-India rollout. The sequel is expected to capitalise on festive holidays and an expanded overseas release.

Ajay Devgn reprises his role in Drishyam 3, slated for October 2, 2026, continuing the popular thriller franchise with the original cast returning. Rani Mukerji also returns in uniform for Mardaani 3, set for February 27, 2026, with the makers promising a “brutal case”.

War, patriotism and real events

Salman Khan headlines Battle of Galwan, inspired by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. The teaser was unveiled on December 27, with the film scheduled for release on April 17, 2026.
Another major war drama, Border 2, arrives on January 23, 2026, revisiting the 1971 Indo-Pak war with a large ensemble cast.

Sriram Raghavan’s Ikkis tells the story of Param Vir Chakra awardee Arun Khetarpal and stars Agastya Nanda and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Spy universe and action-heavy titles

YRF’s Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt, Sharvari and Bobby Deol, has been postponed to avoid a box-office clash, with a revised 2026 date awaited.
Shahid Kapoor teams up again with Vishal Bhardwaj for O' Romeo, an action thriller slated for a Valentine’s Day release.

Auteur projects and star collaborations

Bhansali’s Love and War brings together Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, marking fresh and returning collaborations for the director.
Yash returns after KGF: Chapter 2 with Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups, releasing on March 19, 2026, while Prabhas leads The RajaSaab, set for January 9, 2026.

Major South-led releases with national pull

Tamil superstar Vijay’s Jana Nayagan is positioned as his final film, releasing on January 9, 2026. Rajinikanth returns in Jailer 2, continuing the successful franchise.

More titles crowding the calendar

Other films generating buzz include Haiwaan, Bhooth Bangla, Vadh 2, Peddi, Dacoit, Fauzi and Shakti Shalini.

With multiple tentpole releases spread across festivals and holidays, exhibitors and studios alike are bracing for a crowded, high-stakes year. If even a handful of these projects deliver, 2026 could reset box-office benchmarks for Hindi cinema.
