LOS ANGELES: James Michael Tyler, best known for his role as 'Gunther' on Friends, died of prostate cancer on Sunday morning,

He died at 59.

Tyler passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles.

In September 2018, the actor was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer.

Tyler's shared his story earlier this year, inspiring others to seek a first blood test as early as 40 years old if they have prostate cancer.

Tyler was most known for his role as Gunther, Central Perk cafe employee who has an unrequited crush on Jennifer Aniston's Rachel on the NBC sitcom Friends.

The actor, dubbed "the seventh Friend" by fans, was series regular, first appearing in the second episode of Friends and then returning as guest star for the rest of the show's ten-year run. 

He makes the most appearances as recurring guest star throughout the series.

Tyler's acting career began in 1992, with roles in shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Scrubs, and "Modern Music."

 

He continued to act while undergoing treatment, starring in two short films, The Gesture and the Word and Processing, and winning best-actor prizes at a number of domestic and international film festivals.

Tyler is survived by his wife, Jennifer Carno.
