A powerful storm accompanied by heavy rain has devastated bird habitats in the Balitika area of Kaliabor, resulting in the death of over a hundred baya weaver birds and significant damage to their nests. Strong winds caused several trees to collapse, leading to the destruction of bamboo nests and endangering the local bird population.
According to local residents, the baya weaver birds had built hundreds of nests on trees across the region. The sudden storm tore through the area, bringing down trees and causing nests to fall. In the aftermath, dead birds were found scattered across the ground, and many eggs and chicks were seen damaged or missing.
Environmental activists and birdwatchers have expressed concern over the impact of extreme weather on wildlife, particularly during the breeding season. “These birds spend days weaving their nests. The loss is tragic and could have a long-term impact on the local ecosystem,” said a local conservationist.
Authorities have yet to assess the full scale of the damage, but residents are urging forest and wildlife officials to take note and consider protective measures in the future.
This incident comes amid rising concerns about the vulnerability of local fauna to increasingly erratic weather patterns, potentially linked to climate change.
