Fumio Kishida to become new Prime Minister of Japan

TOKYO: Fumio Kishida (64), Japan's former Foreign Minister, has won the ruling party's leadership election and is set to become the country's next Prime Minister.

Kishida will be replacing the outgoing party leader Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, who is leaving down after only one year in office.

Kishida, as the new head of the Liberal Democratic Party, is likely to be sworn in as the next prime minister on Monday in parliament, where his party and coalition partner hold a majority.

After defeating two female candidates in the first round, Sanae Takaichi, and Seiko Noda, the 64-year-old faced Taro Kono, the minister of vaccinations, in a runoff.
