While some of the world's top coffee-producing countries are well-known, others may surprise you. Here we welcome to ‘Damas’ a small hamlet located in the border area of the Northeastern state of Assam and Meghalaya. Home to the Garo community Damas village is one of the top coffee-producing villages in India.
A majority of the people of the village are involved in coffee production. Around 40-50 families in Damas village are gradually trying to become economically independent by producing coffee for a long time.
However, farmers are suffering losses as a result of a shortage of proper markets.
With no market for selling coffee in Dudhnai or Goalpara, farmers have had to dry and crush the coffee fruits at home before selling them to the coffee board of "Tura" in Meghalaya.
As a result, loss of time occurs and transportation costs go up. It's worth noting that the farmers had sold coffee produced for Rs 60-70 per kg.
Many farmers have been forced to cut down coffee trees owing to the loss.
So, the locals have requested the governments of Assam and Meghalaya to focus on developing a suitable market for coffee, farmers will undoubtedly benefit, and this farming will play a significant role in the rural economy.
