Manipur group sets August 6 deadline for NRC resolution, warns of agitation

The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) on Saturday, August 1 issued an ultimatum to the Governor of Manipur and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, demanding that the State Government initiate steps towards updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) by August 6 to identify alleged illegal immigrants. The organisation warned that it would launch an intensified democratic agitation from August 7 if its demand was not acted upon.

In a statement, the JFD alleged that the influx of illegal immigrants had altered Manipur's demographic profile and contributed to the prolonged unrest in the state. The organisation claimed that the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, initially affected the Meitei community before extending to the Naga community, resulting in deaths, large-scale displacement and widespread insecurity.

The committee said it had, on multiple occasions, submitted memoranda and representations to both the State and Central governments seeking an NRC update. It also stated that it had organised public awareness campaigns to press for the identification of alleged illegal immigrants, adding that the latest communication served as a reminder to the authorities to address its long-pending demand.

According to the JFD, a public meeting held at the Manipur Press Club on July 26, 2026, and attended by representatives of several civil society organisations, resolved to intensify the movement if the State Government failed to adopt a resolution on NRC updation before the commencement of the Housing Census on August 17 and the Population Census scheduled to begin on February 1 next year.

The organisation stated that if the government does not pass a resolution on NRC updation by the night of August 6, it will begin a series of intensified democratic agitations from August 7.

Reiterating its position, the JFD maintained that updating the NRC is necessary to identify alleged illegal immigrants, safeguard Manipur's demographic balance and contribute to lasting peace and stability in the state.
