Manipur: Man missing in Churachandpur flood found dead after two-day search, relief efforts intensify

The body of a 33-year-old man who had gone missing after being swept away by floodwaters in Manipur's Churachandpur district was recovered on Saturday, August 1 bringing to an end a two-day search operation, officials said.

The deceased, identified as Thangjohnson, a resident of New Lamka Vengnuam South, was swept away by the swollen waters of the Lanva River on Thursday evening while attempting to retrieve construction materials that had been carried away by the strong current during embankment construction work.

Search and rescue teams had launched operations on Friday morning and recovered his body on Saturday, officials said.

Meanwhile, Churachandpur Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar visited several flood-affected localities, including Sielmat, Lower Chapel Lane, Hiangtam Lamka, Chiengkonpang and Beulalane, to assess the extent of damage caused by the flooding.

During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner interacted with affected families, distributed relief materials and assured residents of all possible assistance from the district administration.

Officials said a comprehensive assessment of the damage is currently underway to facilitate relief distribution and formulate rehabilitation measures for the affected areas.
