17-year-old Naga youth allegedly killed by suspected militants in Manipur's Tamenglong

A 17-year-old youth was allegedly murdered by suspected militants in Manipur's Tamenglong district on September 21, according to reliable sources.

The incident reportedly took place at around 10 am between Upper Takou and Malek village in the Tamei subdivision of Tamenglong district, when the youth was allegedly on his way back to school.

The deceased has been identified as NK Wiphenbou. His body was reportedly found along a narrow pathway by Naga village volunteers.

The Working Committee of the Joint Tribes Council (JTC) strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a “barbaric act of terrorism”.

In a press statement, the JTC said the 17-year-old student was allegedly “ruthlessly murdered in cold blood” while returning to school. 

“These outfits, masquerading as signatories to the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, have once again unmasked themselves as merchants of death, terror, and narco-terrorism,” the JTC alleged in its statement.

The organisation demanded that both the state and central governments immediately condemn the killing and take swift action against those responsible. It also called for justice for the victim and enhanced protection for Naga villages.

The latest incident comes amid continuing tensions between Naga and Kuki communities in parts of Manipur. More than 40 people have been shot dead since clashes between the two communities broke out in February this year.

The allegations made by the JTC could not be independently verified immediately. Further details are awaited.
