3rd DGAR Hockey Tournament kicks off at Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium in Manipur

The third edition of the DGAR Hockey Tournament for men and women commenced at the Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium in Imphal on September 18.
The tournament, jointly organised by the Assam Rifles and Manipur Hockey, will continue till September 28. The event aims to promote unity, discipline and sportsmanship among the youth of Manipur through sporting activities.
Addressing the inaugural function as the chief guest, retired Lieutenant General Konsam Himalay Singh appreciated the organisers for conducting the tournament amid the prevailing instability in the state. He said sporting events such as the hockey tournament can help nurture sporting spirit while also contributing to peace and unity.
Singh highlighted Manipur’s rich hockey legacy and its historical association with the sport. He noted that the indigenous game of Kangjei, or Sagol Kangjei, bears similarities to modern hockey and said several players from Manipur have gone on to represent the country at international sporting platforms, including the Olympic Games.
He encouraged all participating teams and players to give their best throughout the tournament.
A total of 10 teams are expected to compete in the men’s category, while five teams will participate in the women’s category.
The tournament carries a cash prize of ₹1 lakh for the winners and ₹75,000 for the runners-up. Organisers have also introduced a running trophy for the tournament from this edition.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by senior officials of the Assam Rifles and Manipur Police, along with eminent personalities and other guests.
