Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters IGAR (South) conducted a special ceremony in Sugnu, Kakching District, to return six vehicles that had been stranded during the ethnic unrest of May 2023. The event, held on April 8, was marked by dignity and solidarity, bringing together security personnel, civil authorities, and the local community.
The recovered vehicles included three JCBs, one truck, and two two-wheelers, which were abandoned by their owners in the border areas of Chandel District during emergency evacuations led by the Assam Rifles amidst widespread violence. Despite the unavailability of ownership details at the time, the force took proactive steps to secure and preserve the vehicles.
In January 2024, claimants began approaching Assam Rifles to report ownership. However, due to prevailing security concerns and the vehicles being unserviceable, their return was delayed. Through persistent efforts spanning nearly 18 months, the Assam Rifles identified legitimate owners, restored the vehicles, and coordinated a secure handover in a stable environment.
The ceremonial event was attended by Brigadier Gaurav Kapoor, DIG of 28 Sector Assam Rifles, along with senior officials from the Deputy Commissioners’ and Superintendents of Police offices of Kakching and Chandel. Around 300 local residents and members of civil society also participated, reflecting strong cooperation between the community and security forces.
Coinciding with World Health Day, Assam Rifles also organized a comprehensive Health Awareness Camp themed “Health and Care.” The camp brought together medical experts from Thoubal District Hospital and Assam Rifles’ medical unit, providing free consultations, health check-ups, and medicines. Services included Ophthalmology (in partnership with Medilane), ENT, Gynecology, Orthopedics, and Pediatrics.
