India, on May 29, said all illegal foreign nationals staying in the country would be dealt with strictly as per law, while noting that nationality verification from Bangladesh remains pending in thousands of cases linked to deportation.
Addressing the media, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India has already referred more than 2,680 cases to Bangladesh for verification of nationality.
“All illegal nationals who are staying in India will be dealt with as per the law. In the case of Bangladesh, we have referred more than 2,680 cases to the Bangladeshi side for nationality verification,” Jaiswal said.
He stated that the deportation of Bangladeshi nationals would proceed once the verification process is completed by the neighbouring country.
“Once this nationality verification is done, we will be in a position to deport these nationals of Bangladesh,” he added.
Jaiswal further said several such verification requests have remained pending for over five years and expressed hope for an early response from Bangladesh.
“In many cases, these verifications are pending for more than five years. It is our expectation that we will receive an early response from Bangladesh so that, under the bilateral arrangement between the two countries, these people can be deported back to Bangladesh,” he said.
The remarks come amid heightened political and administrative focus on illegal immigration and border management issues in several northeastern states, including Assam and Tripura.
