BJP celebrates, stakes claim to form government in Manipur

BJP workers on February 4 celebrated at the party office in Thambal Shanglen, distributing laddus and expressing confidence that a popular government will soon be reinstated in Manipur after nearly a year of President’s Rule.
Party supporters gathered in large numbers, terming the development a reflection of public mandate and political stability returning to the state.
Speaking to the media, BJP Manipur unit president A Sharda said the party has formally staked claim to form the government and has submitted a letter to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. He added that the BJP expects the oath-taking ceremony to be held soon.
The celebrations follow the election of senior BJP MLA Yumnam Khemchand as leader of the BJP Legislative Party, a move that has set the stage for government formation.

Meanwhile, Khemchand is set to take over as the next Chief Minister, though an official announcement is awaited.
Accordingly, the two Deputy Chief Ministers are likely to be appointed—Kangpokpi MLA Nemcha Kipgen and NPF MLA from Mao constituency Losii Dikho. Govindas Konthoujam is also expected to be inducted into the cabinet, with the Home portfolio likely to be assigned to him.
With the BJP claiming majority support and completing internal formalities, political circles in Manipur are abuzz with anticipation as the state prepares to move out of central rule and return to an elected government.
