A community-funded road project connecting Zeliangrong-inhabited areas of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland is nearing completion in Tamenglong district, marking a significant milestone for the Zeliangrong community spread across the three northeastern states.
The road originates from Katangnam village under Tousem subdivision in Tamenglong district and connects to the tri-junction linking the three states. In a press release, the Katangnam–Tri Junction Assam, Nagaland, Manipur Road Construction Committee stated that the project has been initiated and executed entirely through community effort, describing it as a symbol of unity, shared responsibility and collective resolve.
According to the committee, residents had long endured severe hardship as the existing stretch deteriorated into an unsafe and unreliable track, making daily travel hazardous. In the absence of timely institutional intervention, the community undertook the responsibility of restoring and rebuilding the vital route.
The initiative has been sustained solely through crowdfunding and voluntary contributions, without the involvement of external agencies or major contractors. Churches, religious leaders, civil society organisations, village councils, government officials, public representatives, farmers, daily wage earners, youth volunteers and elders—primarily from the Zeliangrong community—extended financial, physical and moral support to complete the project.
Community leaders stated that the road represents more than infrastructure, reflecting grassroots participation and a deep-rooted tradition of self-reliance. Once completed, it is expected to enhance security, facilitate economic activities and strengthen cultural and social ties among Zeliangrong populations. As the shortest corridor linking communities across the three states, the route is considered strategically important for regional connectivity.
The release also recalled an earlier community-led initiative in which an approximately 15-kilometre road connecting Katangnam and New Magulong Village was constructed through joint village efforts, supported by a few contributors, even without a formal crowdfunding drive.
