Manipur marked a milestone on October 7, with the celebration of the first-ever Loktak Day, bringing together sports, culture, and environmental awareness at the heart of the state’s most iconic freshwater lake.
The highlight of the day was the Loktak Run 2025, a 7-kilometre fun run themed “Save Loktak Lake.” Over 120 participants joined the event, which started from Hemam Nilamani Sports Complex, Ngangkha Leikai, Moirang, and concluded at the Open Gym along Omba Nurathel Road, near the lake’s edge. Each finisher received a medal as a token of their commitment to fitness and conservation.
Organised by the Centre for Rejuvenation of Loktak Lake Watershed & Wetland, Moirang, in collaboration with the Runners Club Moirang, the event aimed to raise awareness about the growing ecological threats to Loktak Lake. It was held under the guidance of Moirang MLA Th Shanti Singh and supported by the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change and the Loktak Development Authority, Government of Manipur.
Adding a cultural dimension to the occasion, the traditional Hiyang Tannaba boat race captivated spectators, showcasing the state’s deep-rooted connection with its waterways.
Organisers said the success of the inaugural celebration sets a strong foundation for making Loktak Day an annual event promoting environmental stewardship, community spirit, and healthy living.
