Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh left for New Delhi on January 16, fuelling speculation over possible moves to restore a popular government in the state as President’s Rule nears its expiry next month.
When approached by mediapersons regarding the purpose of his visit, Singh offered a brief response, saying that the central government would take action “very soon”. President’s Rule in Manipur is scheduled to expire in February, and political circles are abuzz with speculation that a popular government may be reinstated without any further extension of central rule.
The developments come in the backdrop of a meeting held last month in New Delhi, where central BJP leaders had summoned all party MLAs from Manipur, cutting across community lines. Almost all BJP legislators attended the meeting, which had further strengthened expectations of government formation in the state.
While there has been no official announcement so far, Singh’s visit to the national capital has added momentum to discussions on the future political roadmap for Manipur.
