Former police officer Thounaojam Brinda on Sunday, June 21 officially announced her candidature from the Yaiskul Assembly Constituency for the 2027 Manipur Legislative Assembly elections, formally marking the beginning of her campaign for the upcoming state polls.
The announcement was made during a programme held at her residence in the presence of supporters, well-wishers and local residents.
Addressing the gathering, Brinda said her decision to enter electoral politics was driven by the need to bring systemic change and prioritise governance centred on public welfare and societal interests.
She appealed to voters to support her despite lacking traditional electoral advantages often associated with election campaigns.
“I do not have money or muscle power, which are common mechanisms to win elections. However, I believe there are people who truly understand the value of democracy. Kindly support me to reach that lawmaking platform,” she said.
Brinda further stated that Yaiskul requires a representative who remains accessible to the public and places the welfare of the people above political interests.
While confirming her decision to contest the election, she did not disclose the political platform under which she will enter the electoral fray. Details regarding her affiliation are expected to be announced at a later stage.
The declaration is expected to add momentum to political activity in the constituency as preparations for the 2027 Manipur Assembly elections gradually gather pace.
Brinda had earlier contested the 2022 Manipur Assembly election from Yaiskul but was defeated by BJP candidate and current Manipur Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh.
