‘I read news of Northeast people being killed, today it is my own son’: Vikram’s mother

The mother of deceased Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram said she had often read and cried over reports of people from the Northeast being killed or assaulted in mainland India, but never imagined that her own son would become a victim of such violence.

“I really feel sad. I don't know how to express it. I am very upset. I always read news about Northeast people being killed in mainland India. I will say it is a cowardly and inhuman act. I read news about the killing and assault of Northeast people, and today the news is about my own son,” Vikram’s mother, Chongtham Ongbi Kamala, said.

Kamala, 86, is a well-known singer in Manipur and has also served as a senior announcer with All India Radio.

She said she did not want to make any political demands following her son’s death and would accept the outcome of the investigation.

“I don't want to make any demand to the government. Politics is a dirty game. I had even discouraged my husband from getting involved in politics. Don't make any demand that will be related to politics,” she said.

“I love people, so I don't want to demand anything and also don't want to say to take any action because my son was killed. Whatever the investigation result says, I will be satisfied,” Kamala added.

Vikram, 54, died in Delhi after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of delivery workers and dhaba staff outside his residence in Kilokari on September 7. Delhi Police have arrested seven men and apprehended a juvenile in connection with the case.
