A bomb blast occurred at the residence of BJP MLA and Manipur government spokesperson Sapam Ranjan Singh in the Konthoujam constituency of Imphal West district in the early hours of August 28, police said.
The blast took place at around 1.30 am behind the MLA's house within his residential campus. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited Sapam Ranjan Singh's residence on Friday afternoon and personally inspected the site of the blast.
Speaking to the media, Sapam Ranjan Singh said a loud explosion was heard at around 1.30 am, following which he came to know that an explosive had detonated behind his residence.
The BJP MLA strongly condemned the incident and said such attacks should not happen to anyone.
“I really condemn that because, luckily, with God's grace, no one was hurt. Such things should never ever be repeated,” he said.
Following the blast, women from Konthoujam staged a sit-in protest outside the MLA's residence, condemning the attack and demanding an end to such incidents.
The incident came a day after Sapam Ranjan Singh returned to Imphal from New Delhi, where he had met Central leaders over the prevailing situation in Manipur.
Security personnel have launched an investigation to ascertain the nature of the explosive and identify those responsible for the attack.
