Sit-in protests were staged at multiple locations across Imphal East and Imphal West districts on Sunday, May 17 as part of a continuing series of demonstrations condemning the ongoing crisis in Manipur.
The protests were organised by the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) along with its partner organisations, including the All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Committee on Human Rights (CoHR), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) and Poirei Leimarol.
According to organisers, the demonstrations have been continuing in different parts of the state since the Tronglaobi bomb attack. On Saturday, sit-in protests were held at Sangaiprou in Imphal West district and at Sagolmang, Leitanpokpi, Pukhao, Keibi and several other areas in Imphal East district.
The protesters condemned recent civilian killings and demanded justice for innocent victims affected by the violence. They also called for intensified military action against militant groups, scrapping of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, and stronger measures to curb acts of terrorism in the state.
Speaking during the protest, a participant identified as Ibotombi said that despite the conflict entering its fourth year, there had been no visible progress towards restoring lasting peace and normalcy in Manipur.
She alleged that the overall situation in the state was deteriorating, with violent incidents and deadly attacks continuing to occur frequently. She further accused the government of remaining ineffective despite repeated incidents of violence.
“Even after deadly attacks, the government has failed to deliver justice. Issuing condemnation statements and announcing ex-gratia assistance cannot compensate for the pain and suffering of the victims’ families and the people of the state,” she said.
She urged the authorities to effectively utilise the constitutional powers available to protect the lives and properties of citizens.
The protester also expressed concern over the impact of the prolonged conflict on the education sector, stating that frequent disruptions and closures were affecting students’ access to proper education.
The demonstrators appealed to the government to address the Manipur crisis with urgency and work towards restoring peace and normalcy in the state.
