Tension gripped the premises of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal on late Wednesday, June 10 evening after security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse a large crowd that had gathered near the hospital mortuary following the recovery of six bodies earlier in the day.
According to sources, a large number of people from different communities assembled at the JNIMS mortuary complex from around 4:30 pm onwards, awaiting the arrival of the six bodies. The deceased were widely believed to be six individuals who had reportedly been held hostage and were recovered earlier on Thursday.
As news of the recovery spread, the crowd continued to swell, with many expressing grief, anger and dissatisfaction over what they described as inadequate action by the authorities in addressing the case.
The situation gradually became tense as emotions ran high among those gathered at the hospital premises. Officials said the atmosphere later turned volatile, prompting security personnel deployed in the area to intervene.
To prevent further escalation and restore order, security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. The action temporarily cleared parts of the area and helped bring the situation under control.
No immediate reports of serious injuries were available at the time of filing this report. Security has been heightened around the hospital premises, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Further details are awaited.
