Manipur: CRPF firing death toll rises to three, broadband services partially restored

The death toll from the recent Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) firing in Manipur has risen to three, following the demise of a 31-year-old man who had been critically injured. 

The deceased, identified as Wanghengbam Bobby from Kumbi Terakhong Makha Leikai in Bishnupur district, succumbed to bullet wounds at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. Officials confirmed that he had sustained injuries to his torso, and his body has been kept at the hospital mortuary.

The incident comes in the wake of renewed violence on Tuesday, triggered by an attack allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki militants. A rocket-propelled projectile struck a residence in Moirang Tronglaobi Makha Leikai, killing two children—a five-year-old boy and his six-month-old sister.

Following the attack, an agitated mob stormed a CRPF camp at Gelmol in Churachandpur district, near Tronglaobi village. The mob reportedly vandalized the camp and set fire to several vehicles. Security forces opened fire to control the situation, leaving five people injured. Two of the injured died on Tuesday, and the third casualty, Bobby, was confirmed on Wednesday.

In response to the violence, security forces have detained three individuals during a crackdown operation linked to the Tronglaobi incident. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether those arrested were directly involved in the attack.

Amid the ongoing tension, the Manipur government announced a partial relaxation of internet restrictions. Broadband services, including ILL and FTTH connections, have been restored conditionally. The decision followed a review of the impact of the suspension on essential services such as courts, healthcare, education, taxation, and other online citizen services.

Officials clarified that the restoration of internet services would remain subject to strict compliance with prescribed conditions to ensure public safety.

The situation in Manipur remains tense, with authorities urging citizens to remain calm while investigations and security operations continue.
