Amid ongoing challenges in Manipur, fashion designer and handloom entrepreneur Robert Naorem has brought the state’s rich textile heritage to the global stage.
Representing India at an exclusive international fashion show in Milan, Italy, Naorem joined ten designers from ten different countries at the prestigious event organised by ETv Italy at the Melia Hotel.
Naorem’s collection, titled “Manipur,” paid homage to the cultural and artistic identity of his home state. The designs incorporated the state emblem, indigenous animals, flowers, birds, and traditional Meitei scripts, all signature elements of RN Designs.
His work focuses on reviving handloom traditions and promoting sustainable fashion, emphasising Manipur’s exquisite woven silks enhanced with intricate hand embroidery tailored for the global market.
Blending tradition with modern aesthetics, the collection featured original traditional attire, Indian sarees, and Western silhouettes. The garments, crafted from Manipur’s signature fabrics, were presented in an elegant palette of black, cream, and ivory, appealing to both heritage enthusiasts and contemporary fashion connoisseurs.
Adding to the cultural significance of the event, Manipur artist Suchitra Wangkhem walked the runway alongside 15 models, accompanied by the soulful music of Mangka. The showcase reinforced the deep-rooted artistic essence of Manipur and its craftsmanship.
Naorem’s participation in the Milan fashion show shines a spotlight on Manipur’s textile industry at a crucial time. His efforts serve as a reminder of the region’s artistic resilience, bringing international recognition to its weavers and artisans during difficult times.
