Superintendent of Police (SP) Imphal West, Kshetrimayum Shivakanta Singh, on Sunday, April 19 appealed to the protesters to refrain from violence and unlawful activities amid escalating tensions during ongoing agitations in the valley.
Addressing a press conference at his office in Imphal, Singh expressed concern over the increasing aggressiveness witnessed during recent protests, particularly during nightly Meira rallies held across several localities.
He stated that while security forces have exercised restraint to prevent untoward incidents, some demonstrations have unfortunately turned violent. According to the SP, certain anti-social elements have infiltrated the protests and engaged in acts of violence under the guise of demonstrators.
“During several torch rallies, individuals have resorted to the use of petrol bombs, catapults fitted with iron projectiles, and stone pelting targeting security personnel,” Singh said.
He further informed that a number of security personnel sustained injuries while attempting to control the situation. The SP also noted that some participants in the protests appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants.
Singh added that intelligence inputs suggest the involvement of instigators who are allegedly supplying petrol bombs, catapults, and iron projectiles ahead of such rallies, contributing to the escalation of violence.
Despite these challenges, he reiterated that security forces have exercised maximum restraint while dispersing crowds, with a focus on preventing collateral damage and maintaining public safety.
“In light of recent developments, law enforcement agencies are carrying out their duties in accordance with the law. Public cooperation is essential to maintain peace and order,” Singh said.
He urged all law-abiding citizens to cooperate with authorities and refrain from engaging in or supporting any form of violence, destruction of public property, or unlawful activities.
The SP also issued a warning that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in violent acts, as well as against individuals found to be instigating such activities.
