The Kuki-Zo community came together on the 18th Remembrance Day to honor those who have lost their lives in the ongoing struggle for justice and recognition. Held at the Martyrs' Cemetery in Phaijang, Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi District, the commemoration drew Kuki-Zo leaders, representatives from civil society organizations, and members of the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) who gathered to pay tribute through a solemn ceremony of prayers, floral tributes, and a gun salute.
This year’s observance was marked by poignant reflections on the community's hardships and resilience. Speaking at the event, CoTU General Secretary Lamminlun Singsit highlighted the day’s significance and considered it as a time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and as a reminder of the ongoing quest for justice. Singsit described the remembrance as both a day of mourning and a rallying call for unity within the Kuki-Zo community, as they strive for a future marked by peace and self-determination.
"The Kuki-Zo people stand united in remembrance today," Singsit remarked. "This day reflects our pain but also our collective resolve to continue our peaceful struggle for justice and recognition." He added that the history of Remembrance Day serves as a lasting testament to the sacrifices made by many, and it carries forward the hope for a just resolution that will safeguard the community’s rights and identity.
Attendees were joined by numerous civil society organizations, CoTU executives, and departmental leaders. The solemn atmosphere underscored a shared commitment to honoring the memory of community members who lost their lives while calling attention to the challenges that persist. The ceremony included heartfelt condolences and prayers offered for the departed, reinforcing a sense of solidarity and support among the Kuki-Zo people.
As a mark of respect, local business establishments remained closed throughout the day. Unlike previous years, however, the remembrance did not see any disruptions to traffic along the National Highway, as community members chose to honor the day peacefully and quietly.
