A villager was injured while two others narrowly escaped after an alleged ambush on residents of Konsakhul village in Manipur's hill region on Sunday, May 31 according to the Foothills Naga Coordination Committee (FNCC).
Speaking to reporters, FNCC Convenor NG Akhiu said the incident occurred at around 10 a.m. when three villagers had gone to repair a local water source that supplies drinking water to the village.
According to Akhiu, the villagers came under attack while carrying out the repair work. One of the three sustained injuries, while the other two reportedly became separated in the surrounding forest area during the incident. They were later able to return safely to the village.
The FNCC alleged that members of the Kuki National Front-Presidential (KNF-P) were responsible for the attack. The claims, however, could not be independently verified, and there was no immediate response from the organisation regarding the allegations.
Condemning the incident, Akhiu described the attack as a serious act of violence against civilians engaged in essential community work. He said the committee was concerned about the safety of villagers in the foothill areas and called for stronger security measures to prevent similar incidents.
The FNCC also urged the state and central governments to intervene, conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, and take appropriate legal action against those found responsible.
