A 48-hour statewide general strike called by the Native People Committee Manipur (NPCM) entered its second day on Wednesday, October 21 with protesters blocking roads and staging sit-in demonstrations to demand accountability for the killing of three Meitei firewood collectors in an attack in the peripheral areas of Imphal East and Kangpokpi.
The shutdown, which began at midnight on Monday, has also intensified pressure on the state government, with the NPCM demanding the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen and decisive action against armed groups allegedly responsible for the October 20 attack at Khongbal Sanurok.
The committee said the strike was intended to press the state and central governments to take concrete measures to protect civilians and ensure accountability for the killings.
The three victims were identified as Arubam Ronil, 30, son of Raja from Nongshum village; Lairenlakpam Inaobi, 50, son of L Tombi, also from Nongshum village; and Kshetrimayum Sushil, 25, son of Deben from Uyumpok Mamang Leikai.
During the shutdown, protesters took to the streets, blocked roads and stopped people from travelling without what they considered a valid reason. Sit-in demonstrations were also held in some areas, with participants demanding justice for the victims and action against those responsible for the attack.
Roads wore a deserted look, while business establishments remained closed and schools and colleges were shut. Essential services, including medical facilities, water supply, media operations and ritual ceremonies, were exempted from the shutdown.
The strike comes amid demands for stronger security measures in vulnerable areas and accountability for attacks on civilians. The NPCM has called on both the state and central governments to take concrete steps to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of residents.
The attack at Khongbal Sanurok, which left three people dead and three others injured, has triggered the statewide protest, with the committee seeking action against those allegedly involved in the killings.
